Summers Abroad
Summer 1: Jordan 
Flagship students spend the summer following their freshman year at MALIC, the Modern Arabic Language International Center.
Owned and operated by Dr. Khalid al-Gudah, MALIC is a private language institution for non-native speakers of Arabic. MALIC is located outside the Northern Gate to the University of Jordan in the neighborhood Jubeiha in Amman, the capital city of Jordan.

Application & Proficiency Requirements
There are no minimum proficiency standards to attend MALIC.
Students apply via UM Study Abroad.
Housing
Students may choose to live in MALIC apartments with their classmates or in a homestay setting. MALIC apartments are within walking distance of the MALIC Center and are surrounded by food markets, restaurants and cafes.
Curriculum
MALIC offers courses in Modern Standard Arabic, Jordanian dialect and Media Arabic. MALIC’s curriculum accommodates students ranging from beginner to advanced. Students earn 6 credits of ARAB 398.
Students also participate in numerous cultural activities and excursions, typically to the ancient city of Petra, the Dead Sea, the desert Wadi Rum, the Roman ruins of Jerash and others.
Scholarships & Costs
Arabic Flagship students typically receive a $3,000 scholarship from UM. Students are encouraged to seek outside funding. Learn more about study abroad funding for Flagship students here. Scholarships are sometimes awarded but never guaranteed to non-Flagship students.

Includes tuition, apartment housing, program fees, 2 excursions, cultural activities and international health insurance
Estimated Additional Costs: $2,800
Includes food, local transportation, visa fees and airfare (typically $1,500-$2,000 roundtrip)

Summer 2: Morocco
Flagship students spend the summer after their sophomore year at the Arabic Overseas Flagship (AOF) site, the Arab-American Language Institute of Morocco or AALIM, a private language institution for non-native speakers of Arabic in Meknes, Morocco.

Application & Proficiency Requirements
Applications are due and qualifying exams are conducted each January. Interested students should contact the Program Coordinator in October to gain access to the application.

Housing
Each student is paired with another Flagship student and placed with a homestay family that has been carefully selected by AALIM staff.

Flagship students are eligible for up to $7,000 in funding from The Language Flagship*.
